  • How does an EAB infestation kill ash trees?

Adult emerald ash borers cause minimal damage when feeding on tree leaves. The destructive phase occurs during the larval stage, when larvae create serpentine feeding patterns beneath the bark, disrupting the cambium layer. This effectively severs the tree's circulatory system, preventing water and nutrient transport throughout the tree. Initial symptoms typically include dead branches appearing in the upper canopy. As the infestation progresses, abundant sprouting often occurs in the lower trunk as nutrients become trapped in the root system, unable to reach the upper portions of the tree.
  • When should I treat my tree?

Preventative treatment is most effective when applied before infestation occurs and while the tree's canopy remains healthy. Our team at Acorn ArborCare, LLC conducts ash treatments primarily from May through July, when trees can optimally distribute the treatment chemicals through their xylem tissue. With emerald ash borer now established throughout our service area, immediate treatment this summer is crucial for preserving untreated ash trees.
  • Should every ash be treated?

Not all ash trees are suitable candidates for treatment. We recommend treating only healthy ash trees with good structural integrity. Trees showing poor health, significant structural defects, or a history of branch failure should be removed rather than treated. Acorn ArborCare, LLC provides both removal services and replacement tree planting. We encourage scheduling a consultation to determine if your specific ash tree is appropriate for treatment.
  • Why should I treat my ash tree?

Ash trees provide numerous benefits including energy cost reduction, wildlife habitat creation, enhanced property aesthetics, and increased home value. A properly treated ash tree can continue delivering these environmental, economic, and health benefits for many years. Our ISA-certified arborists can help evaluate your specific situation, weighing the tree's benefits against treatment costs to facilitate an informed decision about preservation.
  • How do you treat ash trees?

Our treatment method involves chemical injections administered directly into the tree's xylem. We create small-diameter holes around the tree's circumference and inject insecticide using a plugless system. This approach eliminates the need for plastic plugs and minimizes damage to the tree while effectively distributing the protective treatment throughout the vascular system.
  • Who will treat my tree?

Emerald ash borer treatments must be performed by certified professionals with proper licensing. All our injection treatments are conducted by licensed pesticide applicators. Please contact us to schedule an appointment for your ash tree evaluation and treatment.
